Personal

Charles grew up in Taipei, and left for Auckland, New Zealand at the age of 13 to learn English at the behest of his wise father.

He excelled at rugby and math, then went to Ohio to continue his love for nature and computer science. In his free time, he studied philosophy, became fascinated by the works of Hermann Hesse, and was curious about the capabilities and the limitations of human language in conveying meaning.

What is “meaning”, are there different spectrums of meaning and experiences, and how much of it can we convince another of? Why are meanings often lost??

While working on his MSc at King’s College London to try and answer those questions, he met a beautiful young violinist who he took lessons from. They fell in love. Without even knowing what umlauts are, Charles gave up everything and moved to Germany with her. They traveled around all of Europe stopping short of Russia on a single Interrail ticket (taking turns hiding in the WC). For a little while, Charles was a street musician, and dumpster dived for the morsels Eastern Europe had to offer!

Upon receiving his doctorate from University of Stuttgart, Charles came back to the US.

As an adrenaline junkie, he likes to race cars and motorcycles, and has a collection of Ducatis over his 20 years of riding career.

He’s explored 24 countries on two wheels, and rode across the United States twice.
Between renewing his passport, he is well known in the Tango and Salsa communities of Boston.
He’s also been to Japan 3 times for his Iaijutsu certification. Fortunately, you won’t see him carrying the katana outside of a dojo.

Today, Charles is a technology mercenary who flies south when the snow arrives, and keeps in touch with his friends from around the world.

"We are all flying around space on this massive rock for no particular reason.
Everyone on this rock is just a friend I haven’t met, yet."
